Productivity is key for any entrepreneur if they want their business to succeed. Time is your most precious commodity and how you use it could make or break you. Focus, commitment and drive will keep you on track and taking care of yourself mentally and physically will give you the energy to achieve your goals.
Productivity allows for a healthy work life balance and can help promote creativity and innovation in both personal and professional life. Having a strategy to optimise your productivity is crucial to the success and growth of your business.
Establish Your Goals
Consider what you want to achieve for the day. Create two to do lists. The first should be for the most important tasks and should be limited to 2 or 3 items. The second should be for all the others jobs. You should address your first list at the time of day when you’re most productive. Many people feel they’re most productive during the morning. If this is the same for you then block out the morning for your most important tasks. Dont look at your second list until everything on the first is finished.
You might try setting deadlines for yourself. Giving yourself a specific time frame for completing a task will help you stay focused and motivated. If the task is especially daunting, break it down into smaller goals that you can achieve within the allotted time frame.
Minimise disruptions
Make others aware that you are occupied and unavailable, except in an emergency, until your priority to do list is complete. If you are easily distracted remove or switch off whatever technology might encourage you to procrastinate.
Delegate and Automate
Too often, we focus on the end goal of productivity rather than delegating and automating the tasks that get in our way. For many of us, this means spending hours on a task that could be completed by a machine or someone else.
The key is to consider what works best for you. If you’re struggling to get your work done, consider taking some time to look at your process and see if there are any areas where automation or delegation could reduce the workload.
Think about what tasks might easily be done by someone else. There’s no need to be occupying your time with a job someone else might do just as well, or better. You should focus on the important tasks that demand your attention. Obvious examples for a startup might be the accounts, web design and other such tasks that are commonly outsourced.
If you have staff consider their skill sets and delegate anything you feel they can do so you can focus on your priorities.
In this technological age some tasks can be completed using software programmed to automate a process. While any such process would need to be monitored it would present an opportunity to facilitate carrying out what might otherwise have been a time consuming task.
Don’t forget to look after yourself
It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and forget to take care of yourself. If you don’t look after yourself, you will lose focus and that will have a direct impact on how productive you are. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, hydrate and exercise regularly to stay on top of your game.
And finally…
Being productive is essential for any entrepreneur. If you can’t get your work done and meet deadlines, you’ll struggle to build a successful business. Even if you manage to get through most of your tasks by working long hours and weekends, eventually you will burn out. It’s important to have a strategy to optimise your productivity. By being organized and efficient you can focus on the business goals that are important to you.
