How to make a passive income

Passive income is a form of income that is derived from a source outside of your main or original line of work. Passive income can be generated by investments, royalties, or a business that generates revenue without you actively managing it. This blog will take a look at some ideas of how you can make a passive income.

Create an Online Course

The idea of creating an online course might sound like a lot of work and if you want to do it properly you’ll need to put in the effort. However, once you’ve designed and created the course the potential for a passive income will become a reality. If there is a market for your skills and knowledge this could be an option.

There are plenty of software options that make creating an online course accessible for everyone. However, if you are a beginner you might start with Teachable or Thinkific.

Invest in property

If you have money to invest you might consider trying property.  Buy to rent properties do not come without responsibility and will require some effort if you choose to manage them yourself. Use an estate agent to take care of the management if you want a hands off approach.

The estate agent will take a percentage of the rent and pass the rest on to you. You’ll need to allow for mortgage payments, insurances and annual maintenance before calculating profit. Do your sums and this could be worth considering.

If you do decide to invest in property do your research and buy in areas where there is likely to be a demand. Cities, particularly if they have a university, are a good bet.

Invest in stock market

The stock market is an attractive option for anyone interested in a passive income but it should be treated with caution unless you know what you’re doing. If you are interested in investing yourself you could maximise your chances of success if you spend some time practicing with a paper account before commiting your own money. There are many online brokerage services you could use, but the best will offer a combination of a competitive fee structure and information.

Alternatively, you could engage the services of a stock broker or financial consultant to invest on your behalf and pay a fee.

Blogging and affiliate marketing

If you have a flair for writing you could consider blogging.  Product review blogs are a means to encourage others to buy a product. If you have signed up to one of the many affiliate programs, every time someone clicks on a link to purchase the product you will get paid.

Social networking sites

A successful social networker could command a very good income. The more effort you put in, the more you’re likely to draw a following and the greater the following the more money you are likely to make. Social media influencers are big business so if you like connecting with others, this could be worth considering.

Amazon FBA business

Amazon FBA allows you to list products and have orders fulfilled on your behalf. You would be responsible for researching products that are in demand and at a price that would allow you to make a profit.

This is not a get rich quick scheme for an easy life.  Many people can make a living with Amazon FBA but it involves time and effort. Others struggle to find a product at a competitive price or are unwilling to pay the marketing costs to Amazon to get their product noticed.

Watch out for scams

While many opportunities will be genuine beware of scams. YouTube is a great platform for others promising the earth with get rich schemes that will never deliver. Often they will ask you to pay money for a chance to earn money, they will make claims of unrealistic earnings. They may ask for personal information and will claim what they are offering will come without risk.

Just remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably isn’t.

And finally…

Making a passive income is an attractive proposition but it is highly unlikely to come without effort. You will need to set up your income stream before it will yield a passive income. If you consider your skills, interests and research the opportunities there is no reason why you can’t generate a passive income that will eventually allow you to spend more time relaxing and less time working.
